OF SWALLOWS (IN PROGRESS)
     35mm film, handpainted, silent, 2022.
“Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective …Imagine a world alive with incomprehensible objects and shimmering with an endless variety of movement and innumerable gradations of color. Imagine a world before the beginning was the word.” - Stan Brakhage

A swallow's eye is longer than other birds. Their visual acuity is said to resemble raptors. For sailors, swallows are good omens signifying a close shore. My father loved birds. Since his passing, I've felt afloat. Lost and unanchored. In a sea of overwhelming emotions, I look for swallows, as metaphors for moulting oppressive epistemologies and (re)visioning the world.

ATHYRIUM FILIX-FEMINA (FOR ANNA ATKINS)
35mm handcoated+handmade cyanotype gelatin emulsion, animated optical sound, 2016

ATHYRIUM FILIX-FEMINA (For Anna Atkins), the 2nd "quilt film" paying homage to pioneering female artists, was created using Atkins' original cyanotype recipe, coating 35mm film, and exposing each filmstrip to sun. The images are a combination of botanical photograms like Atkins’ images and found footage that tells the story of a young girl tormented by a gang of bullies that, weaved together, produce a feminist narrative that questions malecentrism within the history of the photographic arts and sciences.

RANSOM NOTES
35mm cameraless animation (collage, hanpainted), animated optical sound, 2011

The ransom note, in our collective imagination, is an interesting entry point to the politics of ownership, freedom and exchange value, made by transforming mass media (newspapers) content into a personal message – the re-appropriation of language and meaning through the act of collage. RANSOM NOTES explores this as a means of sorting out the filmmaker’s experience of feeling hijacked during the Toronto G20 Summit and subsequent riots of June 2010.

A FIREFLY
35mm cameraless animation (collage), animated optical sound, 2007

Based on a poem by Souvankham Thammavongsa, A Firefly plays with words, letters and optical sound. The image was made by gluing words and letters directly onto clear leader, while the soundtrack is created by an optical light reading of the text of the poem. TRANSPARENT “C”
16mm, cameraless animation (collage), animated optical sound, 2005transparent “c” is a formal investigation into the structure of language and meaning. Not only does transparent “c” break down the language structure to the basic common denominators, but it also flushes out the direct correlation between sound and image in my work. transparent “c” demonstrates the range of the sonic palette in animated sound through the mechanical performance of the projector optically reading the alphabet. watch on vimeo
